It's a Family Thing

One of the things I have learned about cancer is that it is not a diagnosis of one person.  The cancer diagnosis effects the whole extended family and friends.  When a doctor speaks the word "cancer" it feels like a punch in the stomach to the patient as well as to everyone who knows and loves that person.  Cancer has a history of being a feared disease because of the difficulty in treating it effectively and in finding a cure or preventative treatment for it.

The fact that it is a "family diagnosis" has proven to be a source of great strength and comfort to me and Mark.  We have received hundreds of phone calls, emails, comments, text messages, cards, letters, hugs, encouraging words, flowers, food, and gifts (it's almost like Christmas around here!).  We have also felt the strength of literally thousands of people praying constantly around the globe.

Here is a glimpse of how the cancer diagnosis has effected my family:

Family Trips to the doctor's office:

Callie and Ashley deciding that they will cut the tumor out themselves if they have to!

Chaco, Mark,  Ashley, and Demitri collapsing after a day of medical appointments and procedures:

Mark and Ashley singing original "I Hate Cancer" songs (No, neither of them can play the guitar!):

God has blessed me with the most amazing family and friends.  I am so glad you are in this with me.  I couldn't do it without you!  And to all of you who feel like you need to "do something" and you feel helpless, please be aware that  just knowing you are there should I need to call on you is a tremendous comfort and strength for me.  Thank you for standing with us!

"Friends love through all kinds of weather, and families stick together in all kinds of trouble."  Proverbs 17:17

Thank you for being my friends.

Update:  Week one of chemo and radiation is complete with no side effects other than being tired.  Week two starts tomorrow!

  1. Laura,

I remain in awe of your strength and courage as you walk through this stage in your life. I read your blog every night and after I am always inspired and encouraged.

It was so great to see you at church Saturday night, after your first week of treatment. Know that, in addition to your family and friends, you have perfect strangers praying for you as well!

    With love and faith,

  3. Laura,
    You looked beautiful this morning.
I have been lifting you up daily, along with several other friends going through very similar things.
Your faith has been such an encouragement to me. I memorized Isaiah 54:10 and have been praying "like Mary."
Thank you for sharing your life with us!

  9. Laura, your brother assigned me the time of 2:20pm to pray for you. My Praise to God has been that I'm thankful for the miracle healing in your body that He is allowing us to see. My constant prayers have been that you not have any of the horrible side effects due to your treatment, that the Lord keep Mark happy and healthy to keep you going strong, and that your children will not be scared. I believe these prayers are being answered. I heard Mark say on Sunday that your treatment begins each day at 2:00pm. I'm praying harder now. God said that this is when you need us most. HE is healing you and I am Praising Him in this time! You inspire me to be more like you, Laura. Lexi, my 6 year old is praying for you and your parents. She just told me this. My three girls and I pray again every night. The world is ON THIS!!! WE are here for YOU and MARK!!! Lean on all of us now... all of us! You've GOT to be the coolest Pastor's wife, by the way.... Jesus Freak! I love it!
